Simple Tips for the First Family Meeting
First Family Meeting Tips
Tip 1: Start the meeting right after dinner preferably with some dessert 🙂
A family meeting is exactly that- time to sit down with everyone in the family. Talk to the kids (and adults) that the family will be working on responsibility through an app (a system) to track and earn points. Explain the concept of deeds/ tasks and rewards. This is where house/ family rules come in and if you don’t have any yet, you can discuss and decide on some.
Tip 2: Ease into the system. You can start out with just one or two things that your kids really would like to do, but that should ideally be limited (like screen time or dessert). The more they are attached to the reward, the more motivated they will be to complete deeds to earn the points. Also, start with 2 or 3 deeds that will earn them enough points to be able to redeem rewards that they want.
Tip 3: Not all deeds/ tasks need to be chores, they could be habits or behaviors as well. Small things like putting dirty clothes away or using their ‘magic words’ like ‘please and thank you’ can earn a few points. Tasks which take longer or need more effort like folding laundry or doing homework should be worth more points.
